What Is Fashion Revolution?

It all started five years ago, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On April 24th, 2013, a catastrophic event killed more than 1000 people, and another 2500 injured in Rana Plaza's garment factory collapse.

To this day, Rana Plaza is the largest garment factory collapse in human history. This tragedy raised awareness to the story behind our clothes and the model of fast fashion that is in place today. The horrible working conditions that those garment workers suffered are similar to others in developing countries. They are exploited through harsh working conditions that are unsafe, plus all the environmental damages left behind from stores filled with disposable and cheap products.

It was time to stand up and do something. That is when Fashion Revolution was born. Fashion Revolution is a global movement created to increase awareness and transparency in the fashion industry. A movement that aims to protect both the garment workers, the environment, as well as, you, the final consumer.

The reality with our current model of fashion means that garment workers are forced into extremely long overtime hours in order to make such large quantities. The factories reflect that intense pace with the minimal breaks allowed to rest or go to the washrooms and the lack of safe, structural building conditions.

As for the environment, there is only so much harm we can do! Polluting the rivers, exhausting the natural resources and using tons of land to toss unwanted products is not sustainable. This model of making must change!

Finally, the clothes on the market today at cheap price points are made to be disposable. They are made fast, cheap and easy without regard for quality. They are made to be easy impulsive buys without a real connection to the story behind the item. The creative process is totally eliminated when products are designed only to reach the highest sales targets and push trends. This model is killing fashion’s diversity.

So it is time to learn how, where and by whom what we wear is made. It is time to ask brands #WhoMadeMyClothes or #WhoMadeMyAccessories? It is time to stand up and fight for better working conditions and a proper living wage for all people behind the label.

Are you ready to join the movement? Fashion Revolution Week is currently taking place from April 22nd to April 28th 2019, and you can be part of it by sharing content from @FashRev on your social media channels, and also by tagging your favorite brands and ask them #WhoMadeMyClothes or #WhoMadeMyAccessories! This allows for more transparency of supply chains and for us as consumers to learn more about the real humans behind our products.

We at Chic Made Consciously are proud to work closely with our artisans ensuring they have a great space to work creatively and are paid what they asked for.
